Australian Open Recap – Fast wäre die Sensation geglückt
Glückwunsch an die diesjährigen Australian Open Gewinner Serena Williams und Roger Federer!
Fast wäre Justine Henin die Sensation geglückt, ihre Rückkehr mit einem Grand Slam Titel zu beginnen – ähnlich wie Kim Clijsters an den US Open 2009. Durch Williams’ Australian Open Sieg, den sie druckvoll und mit mentaler Stärke in einem Dreisatzsieg (6:4, 3:6, 6:2) bereits zum 5. Mal erkämpfte, wurde Justine Henin’s bemerkenswertes Comeback jedoch nicht geschmälert. Ich fand es toll, wie entspannt und glücklich sie trotz der Niederlage wirkte. Und vor allem ist es gut zu sehen, dass wir im kommenden Jahr mit einem gehobenen Spielniveau bei den Damen rechnen können. Überraschend kam der Einzug von gleich zwei Chinesinnen Li Na und Zheng Jie in das Halbfinale. Das Ergebnis lässt auf mehr hoffen und scheint auch die die Popularität des Tennissports in China bereits erhöht zu haben.
Bei den Herren war Murray so nah an seinem ersten Grand Slam Sieg wie seit dem Finalspiel an dem US Open 2008 nicht mehr. Nach einem umkämpften Spiel, welches das Spielergebnis von 6:3, 6:4, 7:6 (13:11) erst im dritte Satz im Tiebreak erahnen lässt, wurde der Spieler mit den stärkeren Nerven belohnt.
Es war zudem nicht einfach mit anzusehen, wenn Verletzungen hoffnungsvollen Top-Spielern ein vorzeitiges Aus bereiten, wie etwa bei Del Potro oder Nadal. Das diesjährige Australian Open Turnier hat eines eindrücklich gezeigt: Für den Sieg eines Grand Slams sind neben eines hervorragendem Spielniveaus genau so die physische Verfassung und das Selbstvertrauen von grosser Bedeutung. Denn in den entscheidenden Momenten ruhig zu bleiben – das macht einen Champion aus.

Yes, it was a Spectacular Australian Open !
BTW, did you notice my prediction that Roger and Serena would be the big winners in the Australian Open ? I hate to brag, but I told you all so …. even if it was just three days before the final.
And I think that awesome third set tiebreaker between Roger and Andy was the longest tiebreaker in the history of the Australian Tennis Open Championships and the second longest tiebreaker ever anywhere played in a major men’s final !
Only the epic Bjorn Borg – John McEnroe 34 point battle of 18 – 16 tiebreaker in the 1980 Wimbledon final lasted longer !

As you said, Steffi, I agree that winning a Grand Slam tournament requires an outstanding level of lay, and with that, excellent physical conditioning and confidence are very important, too ! And that staying calm in crucial moments is what makes a Champion !
Whatever happens, DON’T PANIC is wise advice !

Steffi,your remarks are wonderful. But,you gotta specify this : Serena Williams stopped Justine’s remarkable comeback in just Australian Open. Justine is gonna continue her wonderful tennis and when she acclimate,i think ; nobody will stop her. Nevertheless,i agree with you. We can see enhanced tennis in this season and it’s good to know.
Roger won his 16th Grand Slam title and i believe,he isn’t a person!! He might be an alien!!

Loved AO 2010 – lots of excellent tennis! Roger played some of his best tennis in the final. Wish him a calendar-year Slam! It was a pity Justin lost in the final. With her reignited desires Justin, together with Kim made women’s tennis so much more interesting!
